NOT ALL PAINT LINES FROM GOOD BRANDS ARE HIGH QUALITY. There are many "lines" from each major brand- some high quality, some mid-grade, and some low quality paints. And some brands are never recommended, as they don't have any lines which are suitable/high quality on a chemical level.


1) Understanding Paint Components

Pigments

Pigments are finely ground particles that provide color and opacity to paint. High-quality paints utilize prime pigments like titanium dioxide (TiOâ‚‚) for whites, or carbon black (C) for deep base, which offer excellent coverage and brightness, as well as a range of organic and inorganic pigments. These superior pigments ensure color richness, consistency, and resistance to fading over time.
In contrast, budget paints often use extender pigments like calcium carbonate or talc in place of high-quality pigments. These fillers provide bulk but fail to deliver opacity or durability. This results in weaker color vibrancy, more coats required for coverage, and a faster rate of fading when exposed to sunlight or other environmental conditions.


Binders
Binders, or resins, are polymers that form the paint film, binding pigments together and adhering them to the painted surface. Common binders include latex (the cheapest), latex-acrylic, acrylic, alkyd, urethane, and epoxy resins. More complex binders for industrial or marine applications include PVA, silicone, phenolic, chlorinated rubber, bitumin, polyamide, and cationic. High-quality paints use premium binders that enhance adhesion, flexibility, and resistance to environmental factors, resulting in a more durable and long-lasting finish. The ideal binder used will depend on the surface, use, and environment. The high-quality residential trim product we use, for example, combines a tri-blend mixture of urethane, acrylic, and alkyd for superior durability and scratch resistance, rain and moisture resistance, fade resistance, brightness and beauty. And unlike pure oil or alkyd products, it doesn't ever yellow as it's urethane-modified.
Lower-quality paints often rely on cheaper or lower-grade binders, which compromise adhesion and elasticity. This can lead to cracking, peeling, and chalking over time, especially in high-traffic or weather-exposed areas. These paints also struggle to form a consistent film, making them less durable and more prone to wear and tear.


Solvents
Solvents are liquids that dissolve or disperse the binder and pigments, adjusting the paint’s viscosity for application. In water-based paints, water acts as the solvent, while organic solvents are used in oil-based paints. High-quality paints carefully balance solvent composition to ensure optimal drying times and application properties, minimizing issues like brush marks or uneven coverage.
Budget paints, however, often include excess solvents to reduce costs. This leads to thinner paint films, inconsistent application, and the need for additional coats. The overuse of solvents can also result in uneven drying, leaving behind visible streaks or imperfections.


Additives
Additives are specialized chemicals incorporated into paint formulations to impart specific properties, such as improved flow, enhanced durability, or resistance to mold and mildew. In contrast, budget paints either lack essential additives or rely on basic formulations that do not address issues like leveling, mildew resistance, or UV protection. This results in paints that are more susceptible to mold, fading, and uneven finishes, especially in challenging environments.

On decks, we use a high-quality penetrating oil stain (shipped in from out of state) that nourishes and restores wood's natural oils, enhances beauty, resists rain and water damage, and extends the life of your deck. On brick, we recommend slaked-lime products that allow brick to breathe, and bond directly into the brick's pores, preventing the peeling or chipping which may occur with latex or acrylic brick paints.


Coverage
Coverage, or hiding power, refers to a paint’s ability to obscure the underlying surface. High-quality paints with optimal pigment volume concentration and superior binders offer better coverage, often requiring fewer coats to achieve the desired opacity. This efficiency not only saves time and labor but also results in a more uniform and aesthetically pleasing finish.
Budget paints, with their lower pigment concentration and weaker binders, often struggle to cover surfaces evenly. This results in visible streaks, uneven color, and the need for multiple coats to achieve full coverage, increasing both the time and cost of the painting process.


Fade Resistance

Without proper protection, these organisms can colonize paint films, especially on shaded facades, soffits, and trim. Because paints are made nationally (the paints sold here, have the same formula as those sold in- for example- Arizona or Alaska), even the highest quality paints do not contain enough moldicide to withstand our climate.
As a licensed builder, and also a licensed mold remediator and inspector with both PMII and OSHA, Charles Graves has access to a very effective and safe moldicide use keeps paints mold-free for good, and we have the knowledge and training to apply this moldicide in the correct quantity to each paint. These additives are distributed throughout the paint matrix— not just on the surface— ensuring long-term microbial resistance even after weathering and cleaning. The large majority of painting contractors do not know or care to add a moldicide in- and for those other few who do, generally lack the training needed to calculate and apply it in the correct, safe amounts that will successfully inhibit mold and mildew without compromising the paint structure.
Why High-Quality Metal Primer and Paint Matter:
Metal substrates—whether steel, iron, aluminum, or galvanized alloys— are more complex, and require specialized primer and paint formulations that not only adhere to the surface at a microscopic level but also inhibit corrosion through robust chemical interactions down to the molecular scale. High-end metal primers often incorporate corrosion-inhibiting pigments such as zinc phosphate (Zn₃(POâ‚„)â‚‚) or zinc chromate (ZnCrOâ‚„), which chemically passivate the metal by forming a thin, inert layer that slows the electron transfer needed for oxidation (rust).
